Horseback riding helps children with motor disabilities develop better balance. That was the thinking of staff at the then pediatric rehabilitation center in Hillegersberg. They ensured in 1976, that the Foundation Pony and Riding Disabled Rotterdam (SPPGR) was founded, the predecessor of “De Hazelaar”. She initially found hospitality at the Schieruiters. The interest as well as the therapeutic effect on the riders was so great that the Foundation sought shelter at the Rotterdamsche Manege. In 1986 the big move was made to a place of their own in Schiebroek Park under their own, now completely familiar name: Riding Association ”De Hazelaar.”
